Need for Speed Unbound trailer and full car list has dropped. Following a set of leaks and a lengthy premiere countdown, EA has finally revealed the first look at its newest entry in the NFS racing franchise. NFS Unbound sports a revamped anime-like art style that combines super-realism with graffiti-like cell-shaded animations, resulting in a punkish look. Burnout franchise veterans Criterion Games is leading development on this title, who claims the role from Ghost Games, responsible for the last four NFS entries. Need for Speed Unbound is slated to launch December 2, across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X.

NFS Unbound trailer

The trailer for Need for Speed Unbound draws heavy parallels to the drag racing culture, akin to the Fast and Furious franchise. You’ve got cell-shaded characters — including rapper A$AP Rocky — posing with their cars, as loud music blasts in the background, before heading into the race. That said, IGN has confirmed that you won’t be able to play as him. Rocky will instead appear as an in-game leader, via a game mode called Takeover Scene, where players work together to establish control over the map. Previous reports indicated that NFS Unbound would be heavily multiplayer-oriented, with one of the modes being called Meetups, which pits online racers against one another. Rocky also contributes to the game’s soundtrack.

The Need for Speed Unbound trailer is quite stylish, I must say, featuring green-tinted animated dust effects, shock animations when using nitrous, and pop-out wings when leaping off a ramp. Game Journalist Jeff Grubb hinted at these additions back in April, saying, “You know when you see a car commercial or something like that and the car’s driving around, but then cartoons flames and stuff are flying off it? That’s the kind of the aesthetic that they seem to be going for.” The claim was later strengthened by some leaked in-development footage, showing how the animations are triggered upon impact. For instance, crashing into an obstacle flashes a glitchy screen, followed by a dead skull icon.

Same as past Need for Speed games, NFS Unbound will feature classic modes where you beat the clock, evade cops, and compete in weekly qualifiers for what’s described as “Lakeshore’s ultimate street racing challenge: The Grand.” The entry also brings a new boost feature called Burst Nitrous, propelling you into speed territories that create a dizzying effect.
